How Have Closet Designs Changed Over the Years?

According to Home Stratosphere, in the last 100 years, the average height of men has increased by four inches. Surprisingly, this change has affected many design realities that you may never have guessed! One such change was in closet designs. As the average height of people increased, so too did their storage needs. Higher shelves and hanging bars could more adequately serve storage needs for these taller folks. Let's take a look at some of the other ways that closet designs have changed over the years.

Modern Closet Designs

In addition to growing taller, people, in general, have more clothes and apparel than they did 100 years ago. It's estimated that the closet became a regular part of most homes in the United States in the mid-1800s. Of course, those closets were a far cry from the modern designs that closets have today. It was at the start of the 1950s that more modern closet designs came into being. And, in the 1980s, closets were transformed yet again.

What began as a simple space to hang the few clothes one may have, has evolved into something quite different! The earliest closets were generally small, not deep enough to walk into, and consisted of a hanging rod and a shelf. There may have been a light bulb with a pull cord to illuminate the space, but this feature was likely not present in many closets during the pre-1980s period of closet design.

Today's closets are as spacious as there is space available. Walk-in custom closets that contain sofas, lounges, and easy chairs are now fairly common. So too are island dressers that enhance the closet design and storage capabilities. As many more people turn their homes into their sanctuaries, they are paying more attention to detail. This means that custom closets continue to grow in popularity!

Now that we've moved on from standard closets with just a shelf and one hanging bar, the closet design possibilities are endless. Walk-in closets seem to come with every newly built home, and not just in the main bedroom. Custom closets are popping up in bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and garages. In the kitchen, you're likely to find custom-designed pantries and cabinets.
